Several roads in and around Colombo will be closed on May 1 to
facilitate processions for Workers Day or May Day rallies, say the
Colombo Traffic Police. All roads that are used by processions will
remain closed until the group or groups pass the particular location,
say Police.
The following are the venues and stipulated vehicle parking areas in and around Colombo, according to Police.
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) or the United May Day
procession will begin from Campbell Park in Borella. It will march along
Borella junction, Ward Place, Soysa Roundabout, Alexander Place and
reach the venue at the Colombo Municipal Council Grounds.
Vehicles with route labels A1 arriving towards the city along the
Kandy and Negombo roads could proceed along the Kelaniya Bridge,
Bandaranaike Roundabout, Baseline Road, Dematagoda Junction to Prisons
Junction.
Vehicles (with A1 label) could be parked along Deans Road in
Maradana after arriving along Borella junction, Ward Place and Soysa
Roundabout.
Vehicles (with A2 labels) arriving along Galle Road to proceed
along Wellawatte, Bambalapitiya, Kollupitiya Junction, Liberty Junction,
Piththala Handiya, Kompannaveediya Junction, Malay Street, Parsons
Road, D.R. Wijewardene Mawatha, Maradana Bridge, Jayantha Weerasekera
Mawatha, Sri Saddharma Mawatha, Ingram’s Junction, Baseline Road,
Dematagoda Junction to Prisons Junction.
Parking for A2 label vehicles on left side of Green Path, Colombo 7
after arriving along Borella, Ward Place, Kannangara Mawatha and Horton
Place Roundabout.
Vehicles carrying A3 labels arriving along High Level Road could
proceed from Nugegoda, Kirulapone, Baseline Road, Narahenpitiya
Junction, Kanatta Roundabout, Borella Junction, Maradana Road,
Gnanarthapradeepa Mawatha Junction. Vehicles could be parked along
Reid’s Avenue after arriving along Kinsey Place, Ward Place, Soysa
Roundabout, Horton Place Roundabout, Nanda Motors-Independence Avenue
Roundabout.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will hold its May Day Rally at
the BRC Grounds in Colombo after marching from the S. De S. Jayasinghe
Grounds along Allen Avenue, Kalubowila Hospital Road, Sri Saranankara
Mawatha, Pamankada Stafford Avenue, Maya Road Roundabout, Havelock Road
to BRC Grounds. Vehicles could proceed along Hill Street, Dehiwala and
Allan Avenue and parking will be along Isipathana Mawatha and Park Lane.
Several other political parties and trade union groups will march from near the Fort Railway Station to their respective venues.
The following roads will be closed on Mat 01:
F.R. Senanayake Mawatha from the Kannangara Mawatha colour lights to Dharmapala Mawatha.
Green Path from Horton Roundabout to Public Library Roundabout.
Baseline Road from Dematagoda junction to Borella junction.
Park Lane from Park Road junction to Isipathana Mawatha junction.
Other roads will close during the duration of the respective processions, according to the City Traffic Police.
