Racing kids make daddy blush at Pannala

Trying to emulate their much renowned daddy Shane Gunawardane, little sensations Jaden and Aaron Gunawardane put in a magnificent show at the Pannala Race Track to steal first and third places in the Standard motorcycles upto 125 CC events on Sunday. Jaden (9) and Aaron (7) were given a tough time by 22-year old Kumar Jegan from India.

Jaden kept him at bay in both of the 10-lap event and stole the limelight at Pannala by claiming three events, including the standard 125 CC races for under-16 age group.

The Gunawardane brothers, still needing more than nine years to claim their national riding licenses, rode two TVS Star 125 CC bikes while Kumar Jegan rode the same bike of his country´s origin. Jaden, kept his promising talents up on the rise as he won the event for the third consecutive time in two races.

In the much awaited SLGT Cars upto 3500 CC event, Aravinda Premadasa was a notable absentee. However, Dinesh Deheragoda kept the momentum he gained at the start to win the race comfortably. The 10-lap event was one of the fastest in the meet but lacked some colour as super fast drivers, Pasindu Peiris and Ashan Silva had to move out amid the race due to some technical failure of their vehicles.

Dinesh Jayawardane and Gayan Ranatunga won the Formula races quite comfortably and this kind of event is yet to be popularized among the Sri Lankan racing fraternity. McLarens boss in Sri Lanka Rohan de Silva, who has a major share at the Pannala Racing Track, drove wheel to wheel with his nephew Jayawardane in the Formula Ford 1600 event but settled for the third place at the conclusion of the 10-lap event.

This event demands a lot from the organizers as well as from the competitions since there are only two locations in Sri Lanka which can hold such events, Pannala and Katukurunda. The third leg of the series will be held on June 26th at the same venue.
