Shafraz duo comes out on top at Monsoon Southern Rally

The Motor Plus Southern Monsoon Rally 2010 which concluded last week saw one of the leading rally drivers Shafraz Junaid along with his co-driver Shafraz Hamzadeen come out on top in the grueling 600km three stage event held at Matara.

The Shafraz duo, that played second fiddle in the Kantalai rally a few weeks back which of course was of a different caliber, ended the three stage rally with only 68 debit points against their name.

Following in second place was Yakub Ariff and Mohamed Arshaf while another experienced campaigner Ashar Hameem along with Chandika Amarasinghe secured the third slot. The Rally which commenced at Matara saw 27 drivers along with their co-drivers speed off at an interval of two minutes. But the notable absentees were Aravinda Premadasa who had entered to participate and Dinesh Dinesh Deheragoda.

The specialty of the rally was the participation of three women drivers navigated by their male co-drivers which happened for the first time in the history of the Southern Monsoon Rally.

Champion Shafraz Junaid and Hamzadeen in their Nissan Cab got off to a flying start when they secured the first place in the first stage from Matara to Middeniya.

The duo had only 38 debit points against them with Ariff and Arshaf coming in second with 58 and Hameem and Amarasinghe in third with 118 against them.

Hameem and Amarasinghe in their Mitsubishi Montero came back with a vengeance as the duo took the second stage from Middeniya to Weerawila and then repeated the feat by taking the third stage from Weeravila to the finishing point Matara.

The duo finish the second and third stages with low debit points against them of 19 and three but the 118 they conceded in the first stage was too much for them to gain the first or second place and ended up with 140.

In contrast the Shafraz duo though ending up fifth in the second and second in the third stages they were well ahead of the others. Second placed Ariff and Arshaf in their Suzuki Vitara rode a tactful race and having conceded 58 in the first they reduced it to 24 and 8 in the next two for a final tally of 90.

But Hameem and his team mates of Southern Team One bagged the team title with the Shafraz duo’s Taem Ezy securing the second slot and Team Unknown comprising of Mansoor Hassen, Tariq Hassen and Rameez Mahamoor who flew in from Dubai to take part in this event taking the third slot.

Champion Shafraz and his namesake too bagged eight trophies as winner of the first stage, overall winner stage three runner up and team event runner up. The 20 year old Rahal Uluwita too met with success as he bagged four trophies.

Rahal speaking to the Daily Mirror was delighted with his performances as this was the first time he took part as a driver having been a navigator earlier on.
