Fee for special number plates up tenfold

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is likely to raise the fee for providing special number plates for vehicles from the present Rs.7,500 to between Rs. 70,000 and Rs.75,000 shortly, informed sources said.

The fee for issuing special number plates is levied in addition to the normal registration fee -- which is also to be increased by Rs. 300 Rs. 400 shortly. The present registration fee is Rs.14,000.

According to the RMV’s Department, the people who apply for special number plates are mostly VIP’s, businessmen, architects, doctors, engineers and reputed professionals in various other fields.

This move comes a month after the Customs duties on hybrid vehicles and petrol vehicles were both increased significantly. The duty on hybrids of engine capacity 2000 to 3000cc was increased by 75%; and that on hybrids of over 3,000cc by. 100%.

At one time, there was no Customs duty whatsoever on hybrid vehicles, and only 15% tax and  12% VAT had to be paid on them. In the past two months about 3,000 hybrids have been imported into the country.
