The Department of the Commissioner of Motor Traffic has decided to
make emission testing mandatory for brand new vehicles after a period of
one year.
“This regulation will come into effect on the first of February,”
said Lalith Dharmapriya, Commissioner General of Motor Traffic.
Earlier regulations required such a test to be carried out only after the lapse of three years.
However the Commissioner General noted that this regulation would not apply to motorbikes and three wheelers.
The department pointed out that this regulation had to be introduced owing to emissions of new vehicles increasing due to haphazard maintenance, a fact that had been revealed during a survey carried out.
The official noted that the regulation, which requires reconditioned vehicles to undergo emission tests upon importation, will remain in effect.
