Colombo, March 14 (PTI) Sri Lanka´´s vehicle imports hit a new record
with the number of three-wheel vehicles bought mainly from India
crossing the 85,000 mark, official figures today showed.
The total
vehicle imports jumped 359,243 in 2010, up 75.9 percent compared to the
previous year, Sri Lanka import figures showed.
It showed that the
number of three wheelers, used mainly as the common man´´s taxi, jumped
120 percent to 85,648 units in calendar 2010.
Sri Lanka imports almost all its three wheelers from India, barring a handful from China.
The number of motor car imports also jumped dramatically by four fold to reach 23,072 last year.
The surge followed the government´´s slashing of import duties by more than half.
Motorcycle imports shot up by 51 percent to 2,04,000 units last year.
Sri Lanka imports a large number of new motorcycles and small cars from India.
