Janaka Dias lights up Kandy’s ‘Speed at Night 2011’

Janaka Dias driving a ‘Subaru Impressa’ won the Super Cars event while Prabath Peiris took the plum for motor cycles by winning the Racing upto 125 cc at the inaugural ‘Speed at Night 2011’ night races organised by the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club and the Kandy Off Road and Adventure Club and worked off on the streets of Kandy City on Saturday with the final races run in the wee hours of last morning.

A big bouquet should go to the Kandy Off Road and Adventure Club and the Sri Lanka Motor Cycle Club for the untiring efforts to make this event a great success. A very large crowd turned up to witness this unique event. The streets and the spectator viewing areas were chock a block with hardly any space left. The Army and the Police did a fine job in the control of the large crowd.

There were a few mishaps when Pasindu Peiris driving a Honda EG drove into the sand bags at top speed and turned turtle in the middle of the road in the event for Modified cars upto 1600 cc. He escaped unhurt. Next Ashane de Silva behind a Mitsubishi Evo 3 hit the sand bags with  power damaging his machine and had to withdraw from the race. There were several other mishaps, however no participant nor spectator was injured.Over 25 000 sand bags were used as a safety measure right along the track which was lit up with over 200 high voltage bulbs of  2000 watts each in addition to the normal lighting system.

Janaka Dias without any doubt was the star of the night and starting from a pole position he drove with vim and vigour to maintain his lead throughout with Pasindu Peiris finishing second and in third place was Rizvi Farouk in a Subaru Impressa.

A surprise winner was young old Trinitian Sachith Pathirana in the event for Modified Mini 7 upto 1000 cc when he out paced some of the top drivers in the event of the calibre of , Donald Buultjens, Hafiz Cader, Kandan Parameswaran, and K. Balasingham.
