Subaru
is upping the ante in the sport wagon wars. At the Tokyo Motor Show,
the automaker is previewing the next generation of the midsize Legacy in
the form of a sleek wagon called the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept.
The car features an aggressive front end with a restyled signature
Subaru grille and angled headlights, while the side profile boasts a
high, muscular beltline and accented wheel arches.
To
power the new five-door and eventual four-door, Subaru downsized its
famous boxer four to create a new, cleaner, more fuel-efficient
1.6-liter turbo and added an in-house-designed single motor hybrid
system with lithium-ion batteries. Engineers say they have been able to
reduce fuel consumption while maintaining roughly the same power output
as the current crop of engines -- namely the 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter
fours. The new powertrain is capable of electric-only operation from a
stop up to as-yet-unspecified speeds. A new version of Subaru's
symmetrical all-wheel-drive system will be transferring power to all
four wheels.
Inside, the concept gets wood and polished aluminum surfaces with leather trim and a full glass sunroof. Of particular interest is the large screen fitted into the steering wheel that displays GPS sat-nav directions and has direct access to the Internet. It also incorporates the company's EyeSight crash avoidance system, which employs two cameras mounted above the rear view mirror that monitor traffic conditions and can detect pedestrians and cyclists. In addition to the Advanced Tourer Concept, Subaru will also be revealing the new Impreza G4 as well as the heavily anticipated production model of the rear-wheel-drive, 2.0-liter BRZ. Subaru will also reveal the STI-tuned S206, based on the WRX STI four-door. It will offer more power and razor-sharp handling, borne out of STI's rally know-how. |
